25 Guitar Licks and Phrases - Greg Koch Page Five

B.B. King lick number one is in Bb and doesn't use a lot of notes. Basically you are in pentatonic box one and two but throw in a couple of major scale notes. Less is more in BB's case. Lick number two Greg says exemplifies where many people have borrowed from B.B. and is also in the same positions. These are accessible licks.

Duane Allman is exposed to us not with his famous slide technique but with regular licks sounding a lot like what has come before in the Eric Clapton and B. B. King guitar lesson. Hint: the pentatonic scale in the key of A boxes one and two! Lick two is in A major pentatonic and is trilling on two adjacent strings up at the 14 fret.

Jimmy Page is next and sounding good! The first lick has two parts in A minor pentatonic and is a classic Jimmy Page really fast flourish with embellishments and then a James Burton kind of Rockabilly second part. Way cool. This is the best lick so far in my humble opinion. Lick two is a B. B. King type melody played fast and sounding like I need to drop out of school and learn guitar or maybe I should enroll and learn...cant decide.

James Burton is our 10th contestant and likely needs no introduction to Elvis fans. Here we use hybrid picking and are almost in country music territory. The hybrid picking and C9th chord bends gives this a unique sound. Lick two in the key of A uses chickin' picking and hybrid picking and is a lick I'd like to learn.

Albert Lee is incredibly influential English guitarist especially for country pickers. The first lick is way cool played over a C chord and then an F chord using the C shape using hybrid picking. A really impressive lick I need to learn how to do. Lick two is in the Key of E over a two five change using alternate picking and initially reminds me of of the bass line in the song Hot Rod Lincoln but has less to do with it in the final analysis.
